David Stone has been interested in photography since childhood when his father gave him a Sears Tower twin lens reflex camera with the admonishment not to lose it. After attending college and serving in the Army, he graduated from the New England School of Photography and has been working in the photography industry ever since. He feels privileged to be on the staff of the Digital Imaging Services department at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts working alongside a group of outstanding photographers, and surrounded by one of the world’s finest art collections. Talk about inspiration!

A recent move back to Ipswich, Massachusetts, was the spark that reignited his keen interest in his personal photography, and he has discovered an abundance of photographic possibilities there. Appleton Farm, The Crane Estate and Reservation, Plum Island, Ipswich Bay, the Ipswich River and the Great Marsh are all waiting to be photographed. The changing light and tides assure that they reveal something different each day. Early one morning as he was walking back to his car from a photo excursion at Appleton Farm, a woman he passed asked if he had taken any good pictures. His automatic response was “Yes, but there are plenty left!”

As a regular contributor to Yankee Magazine‘s New England Photography page on Facebook, David enjoys the opportunity to share his images with other talented photographers. He primarily shoots with Nikon DSLRs, (almost) always uses a tripod, and thoroughly enjoys the time spent post-processing his images. His favorite camera setting is f8 and being there!

David’s photo of the Iced-in Canoe was the winner of Yankee Magazine’s 2011 Winter Photo Contest!

“Weir Was Here—Secret Rooms, Doors and Windows” is the first artistic photographic collection documenting the interiors of the key historical structures at Weir Farm National Historic Site, located in Wilton and Ridgefield, Connecticut, which have never been seen by the general public. The homestead was continuously occupied by artists starting with Julian Alden Weir, one of the founders of American Impressionism, and including Mahonri Young, a sculptor and painter of the Ashcan School.

The photographs reinforce the personal connection of Weir to the spaces, which are unadorned yet stark, rustic and ethereal. This fall the buildings will open to the public with the interiors fully furnished and significantly changed from how they appear now. So the photographs offer a rare peek of what lies within these vacant rooms. Portions of the collection have been exhibited at Brigham Young University in Utah as well as the Washington, DC, offices of Senator Joe Lieberman, the Stamford and Bridgeport offices of Congressman Jim Himes and Mayor Michael Pavia’s Stamford office.

Xiomáro (pronounced SEE-oh-MAH-ro), a New York artist, was tasked by Weir Farm to create this body of work to share with the public. He was accepted by the park’s Weir Farm Art Center to participate in its internationally respected Artist-in-Residence program and continues his relationship with Weir Farm as a Visiting Artist. Xio uses photography to draw attention to historical sites where American figures lived and worked to pursue their vision. Other projects with the National Parks Service include President Theodore Roosevelt’s Sagamore Hill mansion — to be exhibited at Harvard College next year — and Old Mastic House at Fire Island National Seashore, which is the home of William Floyd, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

In the world of black and white landscape photography, Michael Zide has a most selective eye. He possesses that rare quality of artful seeing, bringing his sensitivity to gesture and mood to every image. Sensual and tactile, his work elicits a visceral response that draws the viewer in, demanding a second look, a more thoughtful response. His personal vision began as a child after the otherworldly experience of waking to find a luminous blanket of snow covering his Southern California home. That first snowfall set in motion both the search for a view of equal enchantment, as well as a visual memory in search of meaning.
Not surprisingly, many of his photographs are inspired by the striking drama of winter ice and snow transforming the New England landscape.

Over the past 30 years, Michael Zide’s photographs have been exhibited in galleries both nationally and internationally. His landscape photography has been featured in magazines such as Silvershotz, Black and White, Today’s Photographer, Fotomagazine and Photo/Design, while manufacturers of the finest digital coffee table books such as Graphistudios and Asukabook continue to use collections of his work to show off the lush tones of their printing processes. His landscape photographs are held in private, corporate, and museum collections.

Selected as a Master of Moab fine art imaging, Michael Zide’s work is printed on Moab fine art printing papers and exhibited at industry shows and galleries. He is sponsored by Manfrotto, (formally Bogen Imaging) and by Canon Pixma Pro-1 digital ink jet printers. His photos have been used to advertise Schneider large format lenses, Sinar Bron large format view cameras, Mitsubishi photographic printing papers, Polaroid Corporation instant imaging, Millers Imaging, and MPix digital printing services. Michael speaks about personal vision at PhotoPlus Expo in New York City, The Event Space (B&H Photo) and other venues.

Michael Zide divides his time between teaching at Hallmark Institute of Photography, Maine Media Workshops and from his studio in Amherst, Massachusetts. As a mentor and teacher, he encourages his students to develop their personal vision and create photographs that speak from the heart as well as the mind. longevity. She hand-colors her photographs with oil paints–light layers of
paint are applied gently to the photograph until the color application is
smooth and even. This is a time-honored technique that photographers have
used for over a century. Before the invention of color film, hand-coloring
photographs was the one of the few methods of creating color photographs.
The result is an image that is dream-like, elegiac, and (sometimes) surreal.
Her technique nicely compliments her imagery of Vermont and New England.

Blewer’s photographs have been featured in the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine,
Readers’ Digest, Vermont Life, Vermont Magazine and Yankee Magazine.
Her work can also be seen on book covers
published by Random House, Simon & Schuster and the University Press of New
England. Her work has won numerous awards. Ms. Blewer’s work has been
displayed throughout New England and can be found in galleries throughout
Vermont and in Wellfleet, MA and at her website www.victoriablewer.com.
She lives with her husband, best selling novelist Chris Bohjalian and their
daughter in Lincoln, Vermont.

Chris Bennett’s love of photography was sparked from his love for the outdoors. He was raised in rural Maine and spent much of his childhood in the woods behind his house. As he grew older, his weekends were spent driving north to hike on the Appalachian Trail. He was constantly looking for ways to permanently preserve the awe and inspiration that he felt while in the wilderness, and photography provided the medium. On his days off you will find him with his camera in the mountains, pumping out miles on his road bike, or curled up on the couch reading with his beautiful wife and his dog. The photographs in this slide show represent a current series devoted to the season of autumn.

Brian Vanden Brink’s ICONIC – a stunning perspective on the built landscape.

Award-winning photographer Brian Vanden Brink is keenly aware of how cultural changes bear out in the structures we build. A striking follow-up to the acclaimed Ruin, his latest book Iconic: Perspectives on the Man-Made World (Down East, August 2012, $65) represents more than 30 years of work. The theme of iconography runs throughout the book, as each structure presented is iconic either for its unique contribution to the field of architecture or for its cultural significance. “He sees the raw bones of human intent and waits for the right moment to capture the format beauty of a building beyond its function.”

Vanden Brink has traveled the country widely, and photographed in places from Coney Island to Cairo, Illinois, and Las Vegas to Limestone, Maine. His subject range includes prison cells, grain silos, churches, hot-dog shacks, and the ubiquitous empty stretch of road vanishing over the horizon. The photographs are paired with short captions explaining both the architectural importance and the image’s personal meaning to Vanden Brink. He is passionately interested in American history and Americana and, while several photographs were taken in other countries, the main thrust of the book is America.

Brian Vanden Brink is one of the most sought after architectural photographers in the country. His work has been widely featured in such publications as Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, Metropolitan Home, Coastal Living, Cottage Living, The New York Times Magazine, Old House Journal, Custom Home, Yankee, and Down East. His photographs have also been the subjects of four books, At Home in Maine, At Home by the Sea, Porch, and the monograph Ruin. Iconic represents the very best of his work in stunning color and black-and-white images. He lives in Camden, Maine, with his wife Kathleen.

Sean Litchfield is a Boston-based editorial and fine art photographer. A Cape Cod native, Litchfield holds a BS in Photography and works in large and medium format film as well as digital. He produces earnest, beautiful images that evoke the deep sense of uneasiness that marks the contemporary landscape. Ordinary scenes are rendered extraordinary, evocative and memorable through this sense of subtle unease.

The Emerald Necklace — the first comprehensive regional park system in the country — is a diverse chain of parks in Boston and Brookline, Massachusetts, that stretches from the Boston Common to the Forest Hills Cemetery. The appearance of the parks changes dramatically as you travel from one end to the other, and some are covered in lush, exotic plants while others are overgrown and unkept. While there are places in the parks where the links connecting them become less apparent, there is one element that connects them all — the wonderful emerald color from which the Emerald Necklace gets it’s name.

The photographs in this slide show are a representation of the park’s great diversity. By working in the late summer months, Litchfield was able to photograph each park the way it is meant to be seen. A wonderful landscape study for him and one he hopes will continue to draw more interest to the parks as a whole.

In the spring of 2011, photographer Alison Shaw began shooting the five lighthouses of Martha’s Vineyard on assignment for Martha’s Vineyard Magazine. Though Alison had been a visitor to the Island since childhood and a resident there since she graduated Smith College in 1975, the lighthouses were one subject she had scarcely photographed. But once she began the project, photographing the lighthouses quickly evolved into a passion—and her newest book To the Harbor Light, published by Vineyard Stories.

To the Harbor Light is the result of 1,500 miles of trekking: 60 miles over sand and more than 300 over water. While some lighthouses, like Oak Bluffs’ East Chop were right in Alison’s backyard, others were nearly unreachable. At times, Alison had to wait hours for the tide to recede before being able to cross the stone breakwater that leads to Provincetown’s Wood End lighthouse, and when shooting in late fall and early the winter, Alison constantly had to monitor weather conditions.

Christopher Churchill is a Boston based photographer who has been exhibited and published internationally. He spent much of his childhood in Maine and sailing along the east coast was an integral part of that experience. Those memories of being in the landscape on a boat continue to influence how he photographs his subjects. He is well-known for his portrait work particularly his series on American Faith, but landscape holds a special place for him and was his first passion. As he so aptly states, “I have always found the whole process (of photography) to be very important as it allows me time and space to think about the larger world and find a place in that world both personally and photographically. And, to have New England with all is subtleties and seasons be my backyard to make those kinds of pictures is quite special”.

His photographs are held in various public collections that include The Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Center for Creative Photography, The High Museum of Art, The J. Paul Getty Museum, MFA Boston, MFA Houston and The Smithsonian. His editorial clients include Businessweek, Esquire, Flaunt, GQ, Money, New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, National Geographic, Time, and Yankee Magazine. His commercial clients include Budweiser, Liberty Mutual, PBS American Experience and The Salvation Army. He was named a Critical Mass top 50 in 2010 and his first monograph American Faith, was published in 2012 by Nazraeli Press.

For Jon Vaughan, a landscape photographer and gallery owner on Cape Cod, honoring the unique beauty of the Cape is a never ending but always satisfying challenge. His subjects are coastal archetypes, documented out of appreciation and respect for their existence, whether fleeting or enduring. Graphic simplicity is his goal, but it must be arresting, as well as, paradoxically, both subtle and dynamic. His desire is to share an extraordinary moment with the viewer who hopefully becomes fully engaged in a photographic illusion where two dimensions transcend into three and imagination displaces reality as the viewer is willingly lured into “being there”.

A self-taught photographer, Jon has been photographing for more than 30 years and never tires of trying to be at the right place at the right time. Many times he “pre-visualizes” a composition and returns often (many days in a row — and sometimes many years in a row) to a particular site until there is a perfect conjunction of subject, light, weather and tide.

Although Jon prints his photographs using state of the art 21st Century digital technology, his camera equipment is late 20th Century. He hauls around a 1984 medium format Hasselblad film camera mounted on a 15 pound Gitzo tripod and always shoots at the smallest aperture. Jon says he will not give up the visual sensation of transparency film until they stop producing his favorite — Fuji Provia (RDP III).

The images in this slide show are from his 144 page book COASTAL EFFECTS, a tribute to Cape Cod and the Islands. The book is a compilation of 86 color images with dates and times, 11 essays discussing technique and inspiration as well as a table itemizing equipment, camera settings and film used.

Jon Vaughan’s work can be seen year round at his Cape Cod gallery Yankee Ingenuity, Chatham, MA, 02633, (508-945-1288).
